Dr. Deer Live Oak

Details

The Dr. Deer Live Oak (Quercus virginiana) takes a Southern classic and turns it into a whitetail wonder, hand-selected by Dr. James Kroll (aka “Dr. Deer”) from Stephen F. Austin State University. Live oaks are already legends across the southern U.S., prized for their hardiness and sprawling, majestic evergreen canopies. Typically, they take 7-8 years to start dropping acorns, but not this one. About 12 years ago, Dr. Kroll spotted a standout at his East Texas research facility: a live oak that churned out a heavy acorn crop just 3 years after planting. Year after year, it kept delivering, and he knew he’d found something special. Determined to share his good fortune with the world, Dr. Deer collected acorns from this “Mother Tree” and carefully sowed them, watching the seedlings closely. Sure enough, the offspring inherited the same rare trait: early, consistent, and heavy nut production. Now, every Dr. Deer Live Oak we sell is a seedling from the Mother Tree, growing quickly and pumping out sweet, deer-loved acorns that turn your land into a whitetail hotspot way ahead of schedule. Hardy in USDA zones 7-10, it thrives in full sun and a range of soils, offering year-round cover with its dense, dark-green foliage. For land managers, this is a no-brainer: a proven performer that starts fast and keeps going. It’s not just a tree, it’s Dr. Kroll’s legacy of observation and grit, now available for your wildlife orchard.
