Chinkapin Oak

-

Details

Chinkapin Oak, widely distributed throughout much of eastern and central North America, produces medium sized, white oak acorns that mature very early in the season (usually by late August). Whitetails prefer them over higher-tannin red-oak acorns, and the nuts are also coveted by turkeys and squirrels. The fast growing tree grows 40-60 feet tall with a rounded crown and coarsely toothed leaves that resemble chestnut foliage. Native across Zones 4-8, it tolerates high-pH limestone soils and shallow, well-drained sites. Plant in groups on upland edges or along fencerows to create staging areas. The early mast draws deer into view before other oaks drop, making it a reliable choice for high-pH or rocky ground and a favorite of our bow hunting customers.
